| History Commentary: "Originally a good friend of my family, who owned a popular local restaurant in Olean, NY called ‘Pauls Steak House’ gave this set to me before his death. We both were drummers with a strong admiration for Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, particularly Krupa The owner showcased, throughout the late 1950’s and 1960’s and early ‘1970’s, several popular jazz, and even a few big band groups, at his restaurant including The Buddy Rich Band, The New Glenn Miller Orchestra among others. In his later years, Gene Krupa, became a good friend of the restaurant owner. Subsequently he made appearances at the restaurant along with sax sideman Charlie Ventura. This Rogers set, owned by the restaurateur/musician, was among a small collection of in-house sets, used by the owner, both on the main stage and in other banquet rooms whenever needed. It was also provided as a ‘jam’ set for impromptu sessions, both at the restaurant and at the recreational lake cottage where Gene and his group could crash for short layover stays. The seller of this set is in a picture taken during the first original ‘stage’ visit to the restaurant. “I caught Gene just as he was leaving the stage for a break. Our conversation ended with the audience clapping for Gene to return to the stage where his group was waiting on the next set. The locals may remember that Gene held a few impromptu jam sessions at the restaurant, when he would be just passing through to another venue. This set was convenient on these occasions, and he wasn’t inconvenienced by having to assemble his stage-set., which as I recall, was Slingerland. A recent contact with the original owner’s wife may produce some pictures of Krupa as a featured band and possibly working some jam sessions with Charlie Ventura. Interestingly, Charlie Ventura made several return impromptu visits to Olean without Gene (check Page 2 of 'Vintage Olean') as there was always an open invitation by the owner, and usually there was a jam session in the works for the lucky patrons on those occasions. Hopefully a picture(s) of Krupa playing this set will surface."
